Shri Mahavir Khatang

Dear Members & Industry colleagues,

Greetings from Gujarat State Plastic Manufacturers’ Association (GSPMA).

At the outset, I am thankful to all of you for unanimously elected (uncontested) me as the President of GSPMA for the year 2011-12. I will try my level best to fulfill the expectations of the industry as far as possible.

Indian Plastic Industry gained momentum in early 90s when the economy opened up with liberal industrial policies. Since 2000-01virgin polymer consumption in the country increased from 3.3 MMT to 7.5 MMT in 2009-10 with annual growth of 9.4%. Plastic Industries’ contribution to India’s manufacturing GDP touched around 10% in 2009-10. Polymer demand is expected to touch 16.2 MMT by 2015-16 and 20 MMT by 2020.

The Plastic Industry in Gujarat is one of the oldest in India and among the earliest initiatives towards polymer raw material manufacturing. Majority of India’s plastics business revolves around packaging, and as Gujarat contributes 65-70 % to the country’s plastics industry, it is home to many small and medium packaging industries. The Plastics Industry in Gujarat contributes 2.17% of India’s total exports and is worth $3513 millions.

The role of GSPMA in this ongoing development process is crucial. GSPMA is working for the cause of Plastic Industry since last more than four decades. GSPMA remains always in forefront in representing problems of Plastic Industry before competent authorities from time to time. GSPMA also organizing various seminars on different topics apart from its annual seminar. Also organizing PLEXPO exhibition every three years. Plexpoindia exhibitions ranked after Plastindia and Plastivision exhibition.

Further, GSPMA propose to establish Plastic House having R&D and training facilities. GSPMA is also actively associated with Government of Gujarat to establish Plastic Park at Sanand under MOU made. GSPMA is also leading delegations to various countries like China, Taiwan, Germany to visit international exhibitions held there. GSPMA is also representing before Ministry of Environment & Forests regarding banning the use of Plastics in Packaging. Recently, impleadment application filed in Supreme Court alongwith other Association. The case is under serious consideration.

I am inviting suggestions for the betterment and growth of Plastic Industry from all the stakeholders.

Wishing you all the best.

MAHAVIR KHATANG
